Veneers are an investment in your beautiful smile, so it’s important to take proper care of them so they last as long as possible. But to do this, you may need to make some adjustments to your diet. This is because certain foods can put your new veneers at risk, either by staining them or causing them to fall off your teeth. Although veneers are very durable, here are a few modifications you can make to help ensure that you get the most out of them.

Don’t Let Sticky Foods Stick Around

Sticky foods like taffy, gum, or caramels are all delicious, but unfortunately, they’re also very dangerous for your veneers. With time, they can cause laminate loss or even enable veneer fractures. They can even sometimes find their way between your veneers and your natural tooth, causing decay and cavities.

Thus, eliminating or at least decreasing this type of food from your diet can help extend the life of your veneers.

Put the Ice on Ice

Crunchy foods like ice may feel good to chew, but they have been known to cause chips and fractures in veneers, so be sure to delete it from your diet as well.

Prevent Stains

While veneers are much harder to stain than your natural teeth, it’s not impossible. Thus, to keep your veneers looking as white and bright as the day you got them, restrict your consumption of things like dark soda, red wine, coffee, and other dark colored foods and beverages.

Furthermore, if you are a smoker, you can still stain your veneers through this habit so do your best to quit smoking if you can. It will help improve your quality of life and reduce the risk of veneer discoloration.

For Temporary Veneers

While you are waiting for your permanent veneers to arrive, your dentist may fit you with temporary veneers. These veneers are very delicate, and thus you must take precautions with your diet with them as well. Be sure to avoid things like

  • Tough meats
  • Crusty bread
  • Sticky foods
  • Hard foods
  • Pigmented foods and beverages

Once your veneers are in place, you’ll surely love your smile, but keeping it looking as beautiful as it is on day-one will require you to pay close attention to what you eat. Thankfully, with these tips in mind, you can extend the life of your new look for as long possible!
